Introduction

In 2015, the three Level 4 Diploma programmes offered at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah (PAPRSB) Insitute of Health Science, UBD was transfer to Politeknik Brunei.  Since the year 2015 the School of Health Sciences was established and offering Diplomas various health science disciplines in Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedic.  From July 2018, the Diploma programmes offered will be upgraded to Level 5 Diploma.

The school aims to provide our students with the very best opportunities and supports to pursue studies in nursing, midwifery and paramedic and to develop a safe, professionally competent health professionals, proficient in 21st Century skills, innovative, creative and socially responsible with a commitment to serve the community. The school have played a leading role in the development of nursing, midwifery and paramedic education and practice nationally.

The three Diploma programmes offered will provide entry to professional practice in general nursing, paramedic and midwifery.  It is a three year programmes delivered over six academic semesters. These programmes are delivered at PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.  The Institute of Health Sciences consists of top class lecture facilities, a purpose build simulation centre and clinical skills laboratory for skills practice, student anatomy resource room and computing resources.

At School of Health Science, we work closely with the professional bodies, government agencies and the community to grow the health practice and at the same time recognizing the contribution of the more traditional values of Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB – Malay Islamic Monarchy) in Brunei Darussalam.

Diploma in Health Science (Nursing)


The overall aim of the Diploma in Health Science (Nursing) programme is to prepare first-level nurses who are able to provide effective evidence-based patient-centered care.  The course aims to:

  • Equip students with knowledge, skills and attitudes to make significant contributions to health and professional nursing practice.
  • Prepare students with the ability to perform the required clinical skills competently and in full knowledge of the current evidence.

Diploma in Health Science (Paramedic)


 The overall aim of the Diploma in Health Science (Paramedic) programme is to prepare first-level nurses / paramedics who are able to provide effective evidence-based patient-centered care.

The course aims to:

  • Equip students with knowledge, skills and attitudes to make significant contributions to health and professional nursing / paramedic practice.
  • Prepare students with the ability to perform the required clinical skills competently and in full knowledge of the current evidence.

This programme will also allow a progression route to higher studies for Assistant nurses/midwife with relevant TVET qualification / certificate.

Diploma in Health Science (Midwifery)


The overall aim of the Diploma in Health Science (Midwifery) programme is to produce competent midwives who can provide high quality midwifery care, contribute to effective planning and delivery of health care with a woman-centred approach both in the hospital and community settings.

The course aims to:

  • Equip students with knowledge, skills and attitudes to make significant contributions to health and professional midwifery practice.
  • Prepare students to perform the required clinical skills competently and in full knowledge of the current evidence.

​Diploma in Health Science (Dental Hygiene & Therapy)

This programme is designed to provide the knowledge, skills, attitudes and experiences that will enable the students to carry out prescribed dental treatment. 

The programme aims to produce dual qualified dental hygienists/therapist who are caring, knowledgeable, competent and skillful and be able to accept professional responsibility for their contribution to the effective and safe care of patients during the framework of their knowledge and competence.

Diploma in Health Science (Cardiovascular Technology)

Level 5 Diploma in Cardiovascular Technology is an exciting new programme on offer at Politeknik Brunei under the School of Health Sciences. It offers students an insight into the ever evolving field of cardiovascular diagnostics. The programme adopts an integrated clinical approach; giving students the opportunity to experience both invasive and noninvasive cardiovascular laboratories early on. This will leave them in good stead for a future career in the field.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

1. Cardiovascular physiology Basic sciences and physiology are fundamentally important in this field and is taught throughout the course.

 2. Disease pathology and clinical correlation Students will be taught on cardiovascular disease processes and its management. This will provide perspective to the cardiovascular diagnostic procedures they are undertaking.

3. Technical and analytical proficiency Acquire the technical expertise in performing various cardiovascular diagnostic modalities along with the ability to analyze the data collected for correct clinical application.

CAREER PROSPECT

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the top killers worldwide. This creates high demand for well-qualified cardiovascular technologists. Graduates of this programme will enjoy employment opportunities in various health settings; both hospital as well as community-based particularly in this era of early detection and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Diploma in Health Science (Environmental Health) 

Environmental Health is defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

 'Environmental Health comprises those aspects of human health, including quality of life, that are determined by physical, biological, social, and psychosocial factors in the environment'.

 Level 5 Diploma in Health Science (Environmental Health) is a new programme offered by Politeknik Brunei under the School of Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Health Services, Ministry of Health, to equip students with knowledge and skills in environmental health professionals.

Designed to equip students a comprehensive learning, skills and practical experience to identify, assess, audit and recommend prevention and control for environmental hazards.

The students need to understand the role of public health in promoting good health and ensuring risk of public safety and health poses minimum danger to human health. Through lectures, tutorials and fieldwork, students will acquire knowledge about environmental health issues, such as environmental pollutions, public health law, epidemology and public health, food safety and occupational health.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Acquire knowledge, understanding and appropriate skills in every aspect of environmental health

Risk analysis of environmental health issues and be able to provide diverse and effective environment and public health action.

Enable individuals to obtain recognized qualification and registered as Environmental Health Professions

CAREER IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Graduates from Diploma in Health Sciences (Environmental Health) are qualified to work as an Environmental Health Practitioner at the Government and Private Sectors, as Health Inspector, Assistant Environmental Health Officer and etc.

In addition, Graduates can pursue further qualifications at degree, master and PHD's level in various field such as Health and Safety, Food Safety, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Entomology, Environmental Health, food safety and etc.
